Treats Buerger’s disease where middle and small-sized arteries
in hands and feet become narrow or develop thrombosis, creating a circulatory disorder.

Buerger’s disease
Much simpler treatment for Buerger’s disease than surgery, ‘Arterial recanalization’

What is Buerger’s disease?

Buerger’s disease is ‘occlusive thrombophlebitis’ in our language.

  • Occlusive thrombophlebitis

Buerger’s disease is ‘occlusive thrombophlebitis’ in our language. It is a disease that causes disorder in blood circulation as thrombosis or narrowing of arteries occurs in medium and small-sized arteries in hands and feet.
When circulatory disorder is left untreated for long time, the skin gets pale and pain arises.
The skin tissue that has not been supplied with oxygen and nutrition for long time develops ulcer which may lead to necrosis and even amputation.
It only occurs in extremities, and internal organs with high vascularity is mostly normal.
It occurs commonly under the calf.

Buerger’s disease and smoking

Buerger’s disease is closely related to smoking

  • Disease that you have to cut your leg if you don’t cut smoking.

Buerger’s disease is known to be closely related to smoking. Smoking is actually a potent vasoconstrictor and everytime a person smokes, it causes repetitive stress onto the artery, interrupting the blood circulation.
If a person has a genetic trait of being excessively sensitive to smoking but smokes, there is high possibility of Buerger’s disease.

  • ‘Smoker’s disease, not male smoker’s.

It is common in male patients in 20~40s and total patient count is rising every year.
What is interesting is that the female patient count has increased also as percentage of female smoker has increased Buerger’s disease formerly known as a typical male smoker’s disease is now redefined as ‘smoker’s’ disease that does not have to differentiate male and female.

Major symptoms

For smokers, if any of the symptoms of below arises, you must see
a doctor however mild the symptoms are and get a special imaging test
(ultrasound, angiography)

  • Coldness in
    hands and feet
  • Skin exceptionally
    turning pale
    and purple at winter.
    Lower limb
    is somehow relaxed
  • Severe pain in hands
    and feet.
    Hurts more at the night
  • Red palpable
    painful mass
    at the skin surface
  • Nail and
    toenail deformity
    and shrunken skin
  • Ulcer at skin tissue
    and necrosis.

Simpler treatment
for Buerger’s disease than surgery ‘Arterial recanalization’

Reviving leg artery with minimal invasive arterial recanalization.

It is an intervention that finds passage of arteries with real-time angiography and recanalizes the occluded arteries.
Originally, it has been used for leg artery occlusion and stenosis caused by atherosclerosis, but it was proven to be excellent in treatment of Buerger’s disease and therefore,
is being actively practiced in Korea. Moreover, it has fast recovery and superior result, replacing the conventional surgical treatment as a standard treatment It has started from 1960s and has seen technological advances to being able to expand thin arteries with diameter of 1~2mm.

  • ① Major anastomosing arteries in the knee have disappeared and only bypasses are visible before treatment
  • ② After recanalization
  • ③ By conducting exercise and medication after treatment simultaneously, arteries have been developed into thick, strong arteries.

The best prevention and treatment
for Buerger’s disease is to ‘quit smoking’

  • ‘Immediately quit smoking’ if suspicious of or diagnosed with Buerger’s disease
If you are diagnosed with Buerger’s disease, you must quit smoking right away. But if your will is not strong enough, you family and friends must help you quit smoking.
  • Smoking is the root of all diseases.
Smoking can also induce oral disease, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, stroke, cataract, pharyngeal cancers, beside Buerger’s disease.

Full use of smoking cessation program in nearby public health center or medical facility

Special program of nearby public health center or medical facility can be of a great help for quitting smoking. MINT hospital provides smoking cessation program with smoking clinic (internal medicine) If you have it with recanalization treatment from Vascular intervention Center, you will receive care benefits. Anyone insured by public health insurance can receive insurance benefits up to 80% for smoking consultation and therapeutic drug. (100% reimbursement for medical beneficiary and low-income class)
